CubeCart is an out-of-the box ecommerce solution that can be installed on any good web server. With a solution like this the beauty is that you just pay once for the software and then you are free to use it forever. CubeCart isn't quite as fully featured as some solutions we have looked at, but it provides everything you need to start taking orders and it doesn't cost much for a license. Developers will also be glad to know that the source code comes included so you can tweak and modify to your heart's content.
If you decide to purchase a CubeCart license remember that you will need to sign up for hosting with a company that will allow you to install the software on their servers. It's possible to purchase an installation package where one of the CubeCart developers will install it on your server for you, but if you know a thing or two about web servers it's not a difficult thing to do yourself. That said, this is probably a solution for those who have a bit of technical knowledge, especially if you want to be able to make the most of the extensible application source code.
Once installed and running, CubeCart provides you with a central admin console to manage your online store with. The main dashboard screen is excellent for getting an overall view of how your store is doing and all the other necessary tools are easily accessible from the main menu. The console ran smoothly and without any errors during our tests and it's designed well to let you see the key information clearly and easily. Everything from processing orders to putting up new products for sale is handled through the easy to use menu system so you don't need to know anything about coding to get running.
CubeCart doesn't quite offer as many features as some of its rivals so if you are looking for a real heavyweight solution then this probably isn't it. While it provides some integration with accounts packages and shipping suppliers we think more is needed so that your options aren't limited by the software. The functionality when it comes to managing your store is fine, if quite basic, but there aren't many tools to help you market your store or interact with your customer base. However, there are a lot of third party plugins available and the source code provides hook-in points where you can attach your own plugins so as a basic store CubeCart works well.
CubeCart is pretty cheap by anyone's standards – especially when compared to an ecommerce solution where you pay a monthly fee. However, having to manage hosting and software upgrades yourself can be time consuming and expensive in the long run – especially if you don't really know what you are doing. CubeCart is good value, but if you want a really easy to set up hosted solution we recommend checking out some of the products in our top ten.
